Northern Lights Holiday 2025
The Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are a natural light display that occurs in the Earth's polar regions, most commonly in the Arctic. They are caused by the interaction of the Earth's magnetic field with charged particles from the sun, which are funneled towards the poles by the Earth's magnetic field. When these particles collide with atoms in the Earth's atmosphere, they create a stunning display of light that appears in the sky.
The Northern Lights are typically visible in the winter months, when the nights are longest and the skies are darkest. They can be seen from many parts of the Arctic, including Canada, Greenland, and Russia, as well as parts of the northern United States and Europe. The Northern Lights are often seen as a beautiful and awe-inspiring natural phenomenon, and they have long been a source of fascination and inspiration for people around the world.
The Northern Lights can appear in a variety of colors, including green, red, yellow, and purple. The colors are determined by the type of atoms that are involved in the collision, as well as the altitude of the collision. The Northern Lights are often seen as a shimmering curtain of light that moves across the sky, but they can also appear as bands, arcs, or even as scattered patches of light. The intensity of the Northern Lights can vary from night to night, and they may be more or less visible depending on the level of solar activity.
Discover the Northern Lights from £949 Per Person
The weeks leading up to Christmas are among those in which the breathtaking northern lights are at their most visible inside the Arctic Circle. We have a series of Festive Lights short breaks running from late November to the end of the Christmas holiday, with special departures from regional airports across the UK – perfect for combining nature’s most extraordinary light show with the atmosphere of the festive period. On these tours, you’ll search for the aurora borealis by snowmobile (or ‘skidoo’) and on a forest trek, where our guides will take you to a remote vantage point, in the hope of a spectacular northern lights sighting.
